2012 BUS CUTS
If you thought the 2011 cuts were drastic, then 2012 will be worse
In 2011 Somerset cut the subsidies for all Sunday and evening services, and announced that this was the first of three years of cuts.
For 2012, the intention is to cut another £700,000 from the budget.
The County Council have promised a consultation exercise, so watch this space.
We will need a campaign to respond to the consultation exercise robustly. This will happen within the next few weeks.
SUPPORT THE 377 SERVICE ON SUNDAYS
From 17 April there will only be two services serving Yeovil on Sundays - the 47 to Bridport and the 377 to Wells
The Wells service is a commercial service for a trial period - USE IT OR LOSE IT
Tell all your friends, and visitors to the area, that this service needs massive local support -
If you are free on any of the next few Sundays, take some leaflets with you and explain to other passengers why they need to USE IT more
Get out to Wells on Sunday - use the bus
SAVE OUR BUSES
February 2011 marks the start of Better Transport's Save Our Buses campaign.
See the Better Transport website for details
All our bus routes are under threat - Somerset County Council has stated that it will remove half the subsidy for supporting bus services. If you rely on a bus service, then we need your input NOW to press for it not to be cut.
Leave your details on our contacts page and we will pass your comments to the bus operators and the County Council
Campaign to improve Yeovil Bus Station
In January 2008 FirstBus announced that it could no longer afford to staff the 'Travel Shop' in Yeovil Bus Station.
In 2010 South Somerset District Council said it had found the money to pay for improvements so that the old waiting room could be reopened and staffed.
Nothing has happened yet
I overheard a remark recently that ‘there is nothing pleasant about this bus station’.
I really feel that that ought to be a challenge to everyone involved in operating and using
the bus station, and I would welcome any suggestions as to how the
experience for the travelling passenger could be improved – in the
short term, the medium term, and the long term.
I know there is a plan for the long-term replacement of the bus station, which should be due
soon, and would welcome the opportunities for us all to comment, but
in the meantime, surely we can find a common will to do something now.
